Children beat heat in pools in Amritsar

Amritsar , Wed, 05 Jun 2013 ANI

Amritsar, June 4 (ANI): Unable to play outdoor games in the blistering heat, children relax themselves by taking a dip in indoor pools in Amritsar.

Students say playing in the indoor pools gave them relief.

Rahul, a school student, wants schools to have indoor pools to enable children enjoy and save themselves from the blistering heat outside.

"We are enjoying ourselves in the pool and the water is also cold. Every school should promote such water sports. The temperature in our city is very high," said Harsimrat Singh, a school student.

A heat wave has gripped large parts of India, even as the country waits for the annual monsoon rains to reach the mainland.

The working class has been the worst affected by the rising mercury. Daily labourers, rickshaw-pullers, welders, amongst others are slugging it out everyday under the sun to earn their daily bread.

Meanwhile, over 500 people have died in Andhra Pradesh due to sunstrokes and exposure in the heat wave.

May and June are usually the hottest months of the year in India with temperatures often rising to 42 to 47 degrees Celsius in many places. (ANI)
