Dhaka, May 13(ANI): Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus has appealed to foreign firms in Bangladesh to fix a common minimum wage for garment industry workers.
In light of the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Savar, which claimed over 1100 lives, Yunus suggested a 50-cent price hike on garments made in factories in Bangladesh, and added that this additional amount should be transferred to a garment workers' welfare trust.
In a report by The Guardian, this 50-cent surcharge could act like a marketing tool and help take care of the needs of the workers like safety, heath, food, children's education, retirement, travel.
The creation of the Welfare Trust for the garment factory workers will address all the issues of the present hazardous work conditions of the factory workers and provide them with a better and decent professional life. (ANI)
