Indian officials get second consular access to Sarabjit in Lahore Hospital

Lahore, Mon, 29 Apr 2013 ANI

Lahore, April 29 (ANI): Indian High Commission officials were allowed a second consular access visit to Sarabjit Singh, the Indian death row prisoner who is in deep coma at Lahore's Jinnah Hospital, on Sunday evening, after initially being denied access.

The Pakistan Government has reportedly allowed the consular access with restrictions. Indian diplomats were given first consular access on Saturday for a few minutes.

Sarabjit's health condition continues to be critical, nearly 72 hours after being brutally assaulted by six Pakistani prisoners in the Kot Lakhpat Jail premises. He is still in the ICU and in coma.

Sarabjit was convicted by Pakistani courts for his alleged involvement in a string of bombings in Punjab in 1990. He was lodged in the at Kot Lakpath Jail of Lahore.

On Sunday, four members of his family, his wife Sukhpreet Kaur, his daughters, Poonam and Swapandeep and his sister Dalbir Kaur were allowed to see him through a window from outside the intensive care unit.

A senior doctor at Jinnah Hospital said it was "not good for the patient as well as attendants to get close to each other."

The Pakistan Government has permitted only one family member to stay in Sarabjit's room, but the four women left for their place of stay in Lahore after visiting the ICU.

Sarabjit's relatives arrived in Pakistan through the Attari-Wagah land border crossing on Sunday afternoon after being granted visas by Pakistan High Commission in Delhi.

Sukhpreet Kaur has appealed to Pakistani authorities to send her husband back to India for better treatment.

Media reports suggest that Sarabjit has a critical bone fracture and a haematoma which would require surgery.

The three-member medical board is waiting for his condition to stabilize before taking a call on a surgery.

The hospital authorities are refraining from giving any comments on his health status.

His skull was fractured and he sustained injuries to his face, neck and torso during the assault.

Meanwhile, Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari said that the External Affairs Ministry is doing all it can to get Sarabjit Singh the best possible medical treatment in Pakistan.

The main accused in the brutal attack on Sarabjit Singh in a Pakistani jail have told investigators that they planned to kill him to take revenge for the bombings for which he was accused of carrying out in Lahore.

According to a preliminary report prepared by Deputy Inspector General of Police (Prisons) Malik Mubashir said the accused - Amer Aftab and Mudassar hated Sarabjit because he was accused of killing many Pakistanis in bomb blasts in Lahore in 1990.

Both the accused are death row prisoners. The report has been submitted to the Home Department of Pakistan's Punjab province.

The accused said that they sharpened spoons to use as knives, made blades from pieces of empty ghee tin and collected bricks for attacking 49-year-old Sarabjit. (ANI)
