Pakistan panel decides not to send Sarabjit abroad for treatment(2nd lead: Sarabjit)

Lahore, Mon, 29 Apr 2013 ANI

Lahore, April 29 (ANI): A panel of four medical experts has reportedly decided that comatose Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh will not be sent abroad for further treatment, as his health condition is very critical.

Television reports said that the panel is expected to forward its final recommendations to authorities of Pakistan's Punjab Province as also to the federal government.

Sarabjit's family has been demanding that he be airlifted to India for treatment.

Doctors at Lahore's Jinnah Hospital said he has shown no signs of improvement since being brought in on Friday evening, and declared his chances of survival as slim.

According to reports, Sarabjit's family has said he is in a poor medical state, with a bloated stomach and a swollen face, an indication of the severity of the injuries inflicted upon him by the six Pakistani prisoners inside Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail on Friday afternoon.

On Sunday evening, Indian diplomats were allowed consular access to Sarabjit for a second time for a few minutes.

The family is being allowed to see him from a distance.

Meanwhile, Sarabjit's lawyer Awais Sheikh has called for a thorough probe to determine whether extremists were behind the attack on his client. He also said there was a need to know how rods and bricks got into the prison complex in the first place.

Doctors attending to the Indian prisoner said that his medical condition is being monitored minute to minute and added that the next 48 hours could prove to be most criticalfor his survival.

Indian diplomats are reportedly coordinating with the Deputy Chief of Protocol of the Pakistan Foreign Office and the medical superintendent of the Jinnah Hospital for consular arrangements. (ANI with inputs)
