Bangalore, Apr. 24 (ANI): The Congress Party, which released its manifesto for the May 5 Karnataka assembly elections here on Wednesday, promised a agricultural commission for price regulation of commodities and a committee for dealing with cases of terrorist attacks and crimes against women and girls.
The party promised to provide free laptops/digital notepads to all PUC students and making Kannada the medium of instructions compulsory and teaching English as a subject from the first standard.
It expressed commitment to total implementation of the Food Security Act and offering Rs one per kg of rice up to 30 kgs for below-poverty-line ration cardholders.
The manifesto promised an agricultural commission, which would comprise of local administrators and farmers, to control the commodity prices in the province.
"We are going to constitute an agricultural price commission at the state level to regulate the prices of commodity and also in the district level, in every district, there will be an agricultural price commission and interestingly, there will be a farmer representative in each commission," said Karnataka Congress Committee President
G. Parameshwara.
Speaking about the Food Security Act, Parameshwara insisted on its implementation by the Congress Party if it comes to power.
Besides agriculture, the party hoped to transform southern Hubli and Mangalore cities into industrial hubs.
In wake of the recent terrorist attacks in Bangalore, Parameshwara said that the party would constitute a committee, under the supervision of a retired judge to deal with terrorist cases.
"We also would like to constitute a committee to look into all the terrorist related activities and case, particularly, women and children, also constitute a special high-level committee under the chairmanship of a retired judge," he said.
Defence Minister A.K. Antony, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dr. M. Veerappa Moily and senior Congress leader Ambika Soni were among those present on the occasion.
Leader of Opposition, Siddaramaiah, was also present on the occasion along with a host of other Karnataka Congress leaders.
Former External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna, who has begun campaigning for the assembly polls, was not present on the occasion.
An estimated 2,295 candidates have entered the fray for the assembly polls in Karnataka.
Elections to the 224-member Karnataka legislative assembly are to be held on May 5 and the counting of votes will be taken up on May 8. (ANI)
