New Delhi,Media, Sat, 13 Apr 2013 IANS

New Delhi, April 13 (IANS) The government is considering the launch of a 24-hour news channel on All India Radio (AIR) and has evolved a scheme to strengthen transmission facilities in border areas.

Addressing a meeting in Amritsar with Punjab-based heads of various media units of I&B including AIR, Doordarshan Kendra (DDK), Press Information Bureau and the Directorate of Field Publicity, Information and Broadcasting (I&B) secretary Uday Kumar Varma said the proposed 24-hour news channel on AIR would be on the pattern of Doordarshan (DD) News.

Varma reviewed the existing status of AIR and DDK transmission in border areas and discussed the progress of their digitalisation.

He asked DD officials to explore the possibility of introducing a toll free number on which viewers could voice their opinions.

Reacting to certain reports on the monopoly by certain private cable TV operators, Varma said that the matter has been referred to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for rendering its legal opinion on the issue.
