Kollam (Kerala), April 12 (ANI): Devotees assembled in huge numbers to take part in the popular elephant tail catching festival in Kollam, Kerala.
The event is part of ancient festival depicting the childhood days of Lord Ganesha and his elder brother Lord Kartikeya.
Amidst the sound of traditional drums and horns, devotees stood in a queue to witness 12 men, selected from the nearby villages chase down an elephant, while catching his tail.
This festival cum race was organised at the Umayanalloor Sree Balasubramanyaswamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Kartikeya, who is also called Lord Subrahmanya in the region.
"This festival symbolises both Kartikeya and Ganesha playing in their childhood days. During that time, Kartikeya used to pull the tail of Ganesha. This festival has been going on in this temple, since then," said Damodaran Potti, a priest.
The folklore, believe that the act of running after the jumbo and catching its tail will fulfill their wishes.(ANI)
