Brinda Karat pulls up Modi as he woos woman power

New Delhi, Mon, 08 Apr 2013 ANI

New Delhi, Apr. 8 (ANI): With Narendra Modi emphasizing that the Gujarat model of development was a success because of empowerment of women, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat on Monday alleged that the women of this country have seen the hatred-filled politics, which the former represents, and they can never ever give any credibility to just high-sounding statements.

Karat said the statements made by Modi at FICCI Ladies Forum about empowering women have no credibility at all, and added that it cannot be taken seriously for his entire political framework is a framework, which disempowers women.

"I mean, is Zakia Jaffri not a woman and is she not fighting justice precisely because Narendra Modi is denying her justice. Is Kausar Bi not a woman, who was brutally murdered and whose killers were defended till the end by Narendra Modi and his government? Was Ishrat Jahan not a girl who deserved justice, but who was brutally killed in an encounter? And it was Narendra Modi and his government who defended those who were responsible," said Karat.

"So, when your political framework is a framework, which disempowers women because it is a divisive hatred filled framework you can never empower women. And the women of this country have seen that hatred-filled politics, which Narendra Modi represents, and they can never ever give any credibility to just high-sounding statements," she added.

Modi today emphasized that the Gujarat model of development was a success because of empowerment of women

Lauding the hard work put in by the feminine gender, Modi said the global acclaim that Amul enjoys is in part due to the ground-level work that women do to make the brand a success.

"Jasuben ke Pizza's capture a big market in Gujarat, Modi said.

"An educated individual in Gujarat will also prefer 'Jasuben ke Pizza' over Pizza Hut. Lijjat Papad' is a creation of a group of uneducated women. This is a model of entrepreneurship," he added.

Modi cited his government's policy to give earthquake victims houses in the name of the woman of family.

"In Gujarat's schools, we ask for the mother's name for a child's admission, not the father's," he said.

The Gujarat Chief Minister praised the vital role played by women in important sectors, including agriculture, education, and health.

" If we have to create a modern India, we have to take pride in our women and their power. I know of families where women have decided not to marry so they can dedicate their lives to looking after their parents in their old age," said Modi.

"When given a chance, women have far out-performed men. I have seen women take care of parents better than men. Should we not recognise that as a society?" he asked.

Expressing his concern over the difficulties that women face in the 21st century, he said the status of women in India has become worse than in the 18th century despite progress made by society in other areas.

"We thought that we would move towards a modern India with the country gaining independence. We thought that we put forward our values and tradition proudly before the entire world. We would show to the world the true position of a woman in the society," said Modi.

"Sometimes I think we have gone back further than the 18th century. At least in the 18th century, the girl child could see her mother's face and breathe. But in the 21st century, the foetus is killed," he added.

Modi said the women should be involved in decision-making.

"We have to bring this change. We should involve them in the decision making power," he said.

The Gujarat Chief Minister, who is being touted by many as the BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate in 2014, addressed students of Delhi University's prestigious Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) earlier in February. (ANI)
