AIIMS Raipur to look after Naxal-hit villages in Chhattisgarh

Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Sat, 06 Apr 2013 ANI

Raipur (Chhattisgarh), April 6 (ANI): Security forces have roped in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur, to provide treatment to villagers in Naxal-hit Bastar region in India's Chhattisgarh state.

The community outreach facility, launched by CRPF Director General Pranay Sahay includes interaction with villagers in seven districts of the region through internet, digital satellite phone terminals, and mobile phones and it helps them get quality treatment.

The telemedicine facility will also be used by CRPF personnel stationed at remote camps in Bastar.

"There are CRPF camps, which are at least 20-50 kilometers off the road. So the initiative that AIIMS and C.R.P.F have taken is praiseworthy. It is indeed a very good experiment by AIIMS to give medical aid and advice to villagers. As connectivity is improving rapidly, we are bringing international and national level medical facilities not only to the C.R.P.F camps but also to other far-flung areas," said Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh.

Naxal insurgency has badly hit development in many tribal villages of Bastar.

Villagers in the region live in the shadow of the gun, grappling with acute poverty, poor infrastructure and diseases.

At many places, people walk about 30 km to reach a medical facility. Doctors often refuse to visit these areas out of fear of Naxals

But with the recent C.R.P.F initiative, the situation is expected to change.

"There are thick forest areas where roads are to be built and hospital services developed, but people in these areas suffer from diseases and they require treatment. So we have to provide facilities to them. We are very thankful to the C.R.P.F, particularly the DG and IG, for taking this step," said Dr. Nitin M. Nagarkar, Director AIIMS, Raipur.

The CRPF already runs monthly medical camps in Naxal hit villages in Chhattisgarh, and maintains stocks of medicines at its various units spread across 100 locations. (ANI)
