9 militants killed, 17 injured in Afghan operations

Kabul , Sun, 24 Mar 2013 ANI

Kabul, Mar. 24 (Xinhua-ANI): Up to nine Taliban militants have been killed and 17 wounded in a series of military operations within the past 24 hours, the Afghan Interior Ministry has said.

"Afghan National Police (ANP), supported by army and the NATO- led coalition forces, conducted several cleanup operations in Kunar, Badakhshan and Nimroz provinces within the past 24 hours, killing nine armed Taliban insurgents and wounding 17 other insurgents," the ministry said in a statement.

The ANP also seized weapons, the statement said, without saying if there were any casualties on the side of security forces.

The Taliban militant group, which has been waging an insurgency of more than one decade, has yet to make comments.

The Afghan security forces in partnership with the NATO-led coalition troops have recently intensified operations against Taliban and other militant groups. And the insurgent groups responded by armed attacks and bombings.

On Saturday, four children were killed and two wounded when a roadside bomb went off in southern Kandahar province. (Xinhua-ANI)
