Heavy rain damages crops in Moradabad District

Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh), Sun, 24 Feb 2013 ANI

Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh), Feb.24 (ANI): Repetitive bouts of rain and the heavy winds have caused widespread damage to crops in Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad District.

Land used for growing the crops is now inundated with water and uncultivable.

Farmers said that they have lost all hope of growing anything in the near future.

"For the last few days, rain has hindered us a lot. Every fourth or fifth day, it rains, and this results in crop damage. Our tomato crop has been completely ruined. Bottle gourd and ridge gourd has also been spoilt and water is still there in our fields," said Salim, a farmer.

The volatile weather has caused farmers huge losses.

"Everyone here has faced heavy damages. We have invested to the tune of Rs. 20,000 and we are getting no profit from it," said one farmer.

A majority of these farmers are already heavily in debt as they borrow money to make the initial investment to plant the crops, only to loose the crops as well due to extreme weather conditions. (ANI)
