New Delhi,Business/Economy, Wed, 20 Feb 2013 IANS

New Delhi, Feb 20 (IANS) There was a need to recycle used water specially by industries in order to improve the conservation of drinking water in the country, union Water Resources Minister Harish Rawat said Wednesday.

"Recycling of used water should be practiced specially by industries. Water recycling practices are very weak in India so we should bring more technologies into it," Rawat said at a seminar here.

He said there should also be "multiple-purpose dams and interlinking of rivers".

"The government is supplementing the efforts of the state governments, in achieving this, through national rural drinking water programme and the retail satellite mapping techniques used these days," he added.

Addressing the seminar "sustainable safe drinking water in India", Pankaj Jain, secretary, ministry of drinking water resources and sanitation, said: "More and more piped supplied schemes should be adopted and we should soon shift from hand pump to pipe supplied schemes. This will lead to more water conservation".
