Inflation declines to four-year low of 6.62 percent

New Delhi, Feb 14 (IANS) India's wholesale price based inflation fell to 6.62 percent in January, the lowest level in almost four years, helped by slower rise in prices fuel and manufactured items, the government data showed Thursday.

The wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation, the country's main indicator of price movement, had increased by 7.18 percent in the previous month and 7.23 percent in January last year.

The build-up inflation in the first 10 months of the current financial year was 5.09 percent as compared to 6.15 percent in the corresponding period of previous year, according to data released by the ministry of commerce and industry.

Manufactured goods inflation dropped to 4.81 percent in January as compared to 5.04 percent recorded in the previous month.

Fuel and power inflation eased to 7.06 percent in the month under review as compared to 9.38 percent in December.

However, food inflation remained at an elevated level. It remained in double-digit at 11.88 percent in January.
