Maharashtra witnesses surge in rose exports ahead of Valentine's Day

Pune , Tue, 05 Feb 2013 ANI

Pune, Feb. 5 (ANI): Rose cultivators in Maharashtra are rushing to ship off their consignments to America and Europe following a rise in demand as Valentine's Day draws closer.

Cultivators in Amble village in the Mawal region near here are busy packing roses to ensure that the consignment is shipped to each destination on time.

The Mawal region is one of the hubs for flower production and producers pack roses in an attractive manner.

"We tried exporting roses to the USA for the first time and it was successful. Now we are busy preparing the European shipment as the Valentine's Day is celebrated on a large scale over there. We have been sending the shipment there from February 1 onwards," said Shivaji Bhengre, a rose businessman.

"We are trying to fulfill the requirements of the entire European region. I think about 45 to 50 lakhs of roses would be exported from our Mawal region," he added.

Roses are grown in the off-season with temperatures being maintained in nurseries so that they can be produced on a large scale.

The roses are then specially packed to avoid being damaged during their shipment.

The festival of love is gaining popularity in India too with the youngsters celebrating it with full fervour. (ANI)
