Himachal gets national award for rural jobs scheme

New Delhi, Feb 2 (IANS) Himachal Pradesh Saturday got a national award for implementation of central government's rural jobs scheme.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh presented the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) national award to Mandi deputy commissioner Devesh Kumar for maximum participation of women in the one of the biggest poverty alleviation schemes in the world.

Government officials said about 75 percent of the work under MGNREGA in Mandi district was executed through women as against the national average of 48 percent.

The award was presented at MGNREGA's seventh anniversary function here.

In the district, the officials said, 93,000 women MGNREGA workers were motivated to open accounts in various banks. They opened the accounts for the first time through MGNREGA.

"An amount of Rs.75 crore was directly transferred to their bank accounts," an official said.
