Gangtok, Jan 25 (ANI): Climatic advantage coupled with a skilled workforce gives Sikkim a definite edge in the business of floriculture.

Realizing the potential of this sector, many budding entrepreneurs are taking up floriculture.

Situated in the lower Himalayas, Sikkim is home to around 5,000 species of flowering plants. They include rare species of Primula, Rhododendron, Oak and ferns and ferns allies.

Saran Rai, a budding entrepreneur from Gangtok, has successfully taken up flower cultivation. His success is inspiring many unemployed youth in the region.

"I see floriculture as a good business. I smoothly run my family and don't see a better business than flowers. It definitely requires hard work and dedication. Unemployed youth in the region can easily take it up. Our success has definitely set an example for them," said Saran Rai.

Nearly 5,000 farmers cultivate flowers for a living. Nearly 18,000 hectares of land under organic cultivation has been certified by the government.

The state is planning to bring 50,000 hectares of land under organic cultivation by 2015.

Successful flower growers in Sikkim will showcase their flowers at the 2nd International Flower Fair to be held in February at Saramsa Garden in East Sikkim.

The event is expected to draw 200,000 visitors and boost tourism in the state known for its rich bio-diversity. (ANI)
