Number of fatal road accidents reduce in Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 18 (IANS) The number of fatal road accidents in the city has recuced over the years, even as the population and vehicle count has swelled, Delhi Police said Friday.

Last year, 1,786 people died in road accidents in the city. In 2011, the number was 2,066 and in 2010, it was 2,153, said a traffic police officer.

Fatalities fell by 13.26 percent while injury causing accidents fell by 3.27 percent.

"This is an achievement in view of the fact that the city's population between 2001 and 2011 increased by 18 percent and vehicles went up by 93.13 percent," said the officer.

According to official figures, 74,38,155 vehicles were registered in the city till March 31, 2012, against 46,08,026 in March 2005.

Till March, there were 24,12,893 registered cars, 46,44,146 motorcycles and scooters and 2,92,919 goods and passenger vehicles in Delhi.

Traffic police issued 3,13,419 tickets to drivers for not wearing seat belts last year against 2,24,368 in 2011, the official said.

As many as 3,39,185 tickets were issued for riding two-wheelers without helmets.
