World's shortest flight lasts only 47 secs

Melbourne, Jan 11 (ANI): If you are to take the flight on the world's shortest route, you'll spend more time actually booking the tickets than in the skies.

According to the Daily Mail, a contract has been awarded for the world's shortest scheduled flight - as short as 47 seconds - following a bidding war between three rivals, News.com.au reported.

Scottish airline Loganair triumphed in the battle for the route, between Westray and Papa Westray, Scotland.

With a distance of approximately 2.8 kilometres between the airports, the flight duration usually lasts less than two minutes, but depending on the wind direction can be much quicker.

The route, which will transport passengers and freight, was among those in the Orkney area offered as a bundle of the islands' air services in a contract worth around 6 million dollars.

The inter-island service for the general Orkey region has been in service since 1967, with return flights for the short route being offered in 2011 following much interest from passengers keen to island-hop. (ANI)
