Government is committed to ensure empowerment of women: Prof. Walia

Minister of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development and Education, Govt. of Delhi, Prof. Kiran Walia has said that the Govt. of Delhi is committed to ensure empowerment of women in the Capital. Delhi Govt. has implemented a number of schemes and programmes for ensuring justice to these sections of the society.

Prof. Walia informed the delegates that the Govt. of NCT of Delhi has implemented a number of schemes and programmes for the welfare of the women in Delhi.

Delhi Cabinet has approved setting up of 05 Fast Track Designated Courts for ensuring speedy justice to the rape victims. Informing about this, she said that she had written a letter to the Chief Justice, Delhi High Court urging him to set up 9 designated fast track courts one each in 9 districts of Delhi to ensure justice to the rape victims. Prof. Walia further informed that the Govt. of Delhi has appointed 17 Women Protection Officers to save the women from the domestic violence.

Prof. Walia informed that the Govt. has set up 123 Gender Resource Centres (GRCs) under Samajhik Suvidha Sangam which are well catering the various needs of the women and extending the benefits of a number of schemes to the women in order to their empowerment.

Prof. Walia further informed that the Department of Women & Child Development is also running nine Crises Intervention Centres, which provide a support system to victims of the rape. Apart from this, Rape Crises Cell works 24 hours a day throughout the year to aid and assist the rape victims and their families by providing emotional counseling, assistance in filing FIR and follow-up.
