To add some more edge to engineering education, government of India on Friday has approved a bill to set up 20 new IIITs and giving administrative autonomy to them.

These IIITS will be in addition to the already existing four IIITS. These IIITs are brought through the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bill, 2012.

After enacting, the legislation cleared by the Union Cabinet will make IIITs institutions of National importance.

According to an estimate setting up an IIIT will roughly take Rs 128 crore. The central government will give 50 per cent of the cost and the state government concerned will bear 35 per cent. The rest of the cost will be given by industry partners.

It is supposed that government has allowed the Public Sector Undertaking to be partner in the IIITs.
