Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma on Monday said India's wine exports are expected to touch the landmark of Rs 100 crore by 2015. Mr. Sharma said this during a promotional event "Wines of India" organised by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Development Authority (APEDA) to promote Indian Wine at global level on Monday.

Production of wine is not new to our country as it has been mentioned in the ancient texts of Vedas and Puranas but somehow India is still lacking in wine production but the production will definitely rise in future as the demand of Indian wine is increasing at global market due to its quality and standards," said Mr Sharma.

"Indian wine Industry is still in its nascent stage. Although, Indian wine Industry is making its presence felt with approximately 90 units of wineries across the country, of which most of them located around Pune-Nasik belt and Bangalore. With the domestic market of wine growing in the country, the export is likely to touch approx 25 crores during the year 2011-12", he added.

Though, the wine industry is presently dominated by countries like Malaysia, Japan, the UAE, Bhutan, Germany, the USA, the UK, Sri Lanka, Maldives and New Zealand but the Indian wines are gaining popularity in global markets and has started participating in various international food shows including Washington DC, France, Germany, UK and Japan, said Mr Asit Tripathy, Chairman, APEDA.
