What is World Population Day?

New Delhi, Wed, 11 Jul 2012 NI Wire

World Population Day is observed every year on July 11 to raise awareness among people about the global population issues.

It was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Program in 1989, in its decision 89/46.

It stated, "In order to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues in the context of overall development plans and programs and the need to find solutions for these issues, 11 July should be observed by the international community as World Population Day"

Theme of World Population Day 2012 is "Universal Access to Reproductive Health Services" which hopes to create a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled. Millennium Development Goals has also included this as one of the targets by 2015.

On 11 July 2012 many activities and campaigns are being carried out throughout the world to call attention on this matter.

Around 800 women die every day while giving birth and reproductive health problems are the main cause of their ill health as well.

The world population on Jul 11, 2012 (As of 06:52 UTC), was estimated to have been 7,025,497,497.
