A consultation on "Declining Child Sex Ratio and the role of Media in addressing the challenge" organized by NFI in Delhi

National Foundation of India in association with Plan India organised a National Consultation on "Declining Child Sex Ratio and the role of Media in addressing the challenge" today.
A number of dignitaries were present during the occasion and shared their viewpoint on the major concern of Child-Sex ratio determination and decline and their possible present and future impacts on the country.
The list of speakers included, Mr. Amitabh Behar (Executive Director, NFI), Mohammad Asif (Director, Program Implementation, Plan India), Mr. K.K. Pal (Director, RIDDHI), Dr. Neelam Singh (Chief Functionary, Vatasalya and Member of Central Advisory Board), Arvind Kumar (Joint Secretary, P&I, Gol), Ms. Akila Sivadas, Executive Director, CFAR and many more.
A number of key issues related to Sex ratio determination and Sex selection abortion were discussed during the program with various facts and figures.
Mohammad Asif discussed about the "Let girls be born" and 'Copal" projects started by Plan India and discussed how media can help bring awareness among the common people at grass root level.
He said there should be an appropriate agenda that requires involvement of masses at all level. Vernacular media is used to promote Sex selection abortion and need to be prohibited. A proper system of governance for PCPNDT Act should be strongly implemented to increase awareness among the people.
Mr. K.K.Pal demonstrated various figures about the declining sex ratio in the country in comparison to other nations and revealed that in the last past 7 years India has eliminated about 38,15,798 girls in total.
Neelam Singh who is a member of Central Advisory Board discussed about the various government plans and the increasing concern of government towards declining sex ratio in the country.
"After the census of 2011 was released, the data has really made the government think on this issue seriously and the government has already started taking various actions and is planning various campaigns regarding this", she said.
Later, a special session was taken by Ms. Pamela Philipose who discussed about what role media can play to bring the awareness about the issue and help the civil societies and the government to fight the challenge.
