HRD Ministry calls IIT meet on CET on June 27

After the announcement of Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) to conduct a separate exam on the line of IIT- Kanpur, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal Friday called to hold a special meet with IIT council on June 27 to discuss over the situation.

IIT Delhi on Thursday had announced that it would conduct its own Entrance Test with the collaboration of IIT Kanpur, the first premium technical institute, which had opposed government's proposal of Common Entrance Test (CET) for all IITs, NIT, IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) and AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Examination). Moreover, the fix weightage of board marks is also proposed to be considered in CET.

After the announcement of IIT Delhi, Sibal release a statement stating that government will convene a meet with IIT Council to discuss over the consequence and doubts over CET.

"The uncertainty faced by the student community, consequent to the resolutions of the senates of IIT Kanpur and IIT Delhi, requires to be addressed," the statement said.

"Consequently, a special meeting of the IIT Council is being convened on 27.6.2012," it said.

The new pattern is proposed to begin from 2013.
