Test cricket continues to draw more crowds than limited over matches in Australia

Sydney , Fri, 28 Dec 2012 ANI

Sydney, Dec 28(ANI): Test cricket has once again outshined limited over cricket in Australia after more than 100,000 fans attended the Boxing Day Test match against Sri Lanka at the MCG.

This statistic has come up as a surprise because of the low-profile nature of the opponents, Sri Lanka involved.

Around 67,000 people attended the first day of the Boxing Day Test and 39,486 fans reached MCG on day two, Telegraph.co.uk reports.

However, this was still the third lowest count of people attending the Boxing Day Test in three years, behind the 70,000 who came to watch India last year and the 84,000 for England a season earlier.

The only other Test ground in the world able to hold these sorts of numbers is Eden Gardens in Kolkata while Lord's, the spiritual home of cricket and by far the biggest cricket ground in England, holds 32,000.

The continuing celebration of Test cricket is remarkable given that World Series Cricket and the phenomenon of the one-day game was supposed to spell the death of its traditional version. (ANI)
