UP seeks central support for growth

New Delhi, Dec 27 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Thursday sought the support of the Congress led central government in achieving a state growth rate of 8.5 percent in the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17).

Addressing the National Development Council (NDC) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Vigyan Bhavan here, Yadav said his government has undertaken several initiatives to spruce up state's infrastructure.

This included four laning of all the roads at district headquarters and building an eight-lane expressway between Lucknow and Agra.

He sought the support of the union government to tap the unlimited potential of tourism in UP and in constructing of international airports near Agra and Kushinagar.

To attain a growth rate of 4.9 percent in agriculture, 7.1 percent in the industrial sector and 10.9 percent in the service sector, an investment of approximately Rs.16.70 lakh crore would be required, he said.

For the country as a whole, the union government is aiming to achieve 8 percent growth during the 12th Five-Year Plan.

The chief minister also urged the union government to identify and initiate AIIMS like medical institutes in state's backward regions of Bundelkhand, Ruhelkhand and Poorvanchal.
