Over 3,000 join petition seeking justice in Aarushi case

New Delhi, Dec 16 (IANS) Over 3,000 people have supported till now an online petition questioning the CBI's probe into the 2008 Aarushi Talwar-Hemraj double murder case.

The petition also seeks justice for the teenager's parents Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, both dentists, currently facing trial after being accused of murdering her at their flat in Noida May 16, 2008.

The webpage, www.change.org/aarushi, was launched two months ago by Talwars' friend, Shiba Mehra.

"We have made a chain e-mail system through which information about the petition is being passed," Rahul Mishra, another family friend of the Talwars, told IANS.

"We are also taking help of social networking sites to add more people to the campaign," Mishra said.

Aarushi's paternal aunt Vandana Talwar told IANS: "The CBI needs to have more accountability and transparency in functioning so that they do not harass the innocent and let the guilty get away.

"We hope the petition will create awareness about the lapses in the case. We don't want similar recurrences in other cases," she said.

She said Arushi's parents were the victims who were not even allowed to grieve properly.

"They are victims. Today they are facing trial due to the deliberate acts of omission and unsubstantiated insinuations of the CBI," she said.

Aarushi's body was found with its throat slit at a flat in an apartment block in Noida while the body of the family's domestic help Hemraj was found on the terrace the next day.

The case was initially handled by Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police but was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

"UP Police mishandled the case as they lacked professional expertise essential for getting evidence on the spot. In order to cover up for their inept handling, they fabricated a baseless and make-believe story, implicating the parents," the petition says.

"The petition will be submitted to the government and investigating agencies when the numbers cross over 5,000," said Mishra.
