'Returning' Hughes unperturbed by Oz selectors' divided opinions

Sydney, Sat, 08 Dec 2012 ANI

Sydney, Dec 8(ANI): Phil Hughes, who has been named in the Australian squad for the Hobart Test against Sri Lanka, has said he is not perturbed by the divided opinions of the national selector's over his place in the team.

Hughes is still causing heated debate like no other Australian cricketer, bar Shane Watson, despite playing the last of his 17 Tests 12 months ago.

Now, Hughes is back in the squad and so is the sparring over the treatment of Hughes between selectors, players and administrators in past and present.

Former national selector Jamie Cox believes the jury is still out on the merit of Hughes' sacking on the 2009 Ashes tour of England, but NSW cricket boss and former Test pace man Dave Gilbert has labelled it cruel.

Current national selection boss John Inverarity said Hughes was shielded from the South Africa series, but Cox insisted the 24-year-old could counteract anything thrown at him now.

However, Hughes said he just wants to move forward against Sri Lanka, but sees the irony in South Australian cricket director Cox resurrecting his Test career in Adelaide.

It was Cox only who delivered the verdict that brought Hughes's world crumbling down in England three years ago.

"I still remember Jamie coming into my room in England with the news," News.com.au quoted Hughes, as saying of his axing on the eve of the third Ashes Test against England in Birmingham during 2009.

"But he has been a big influence in me moving to Adelaide, along with Darren Berry and Tim Nielsen. He has really supported me over the past six months and been fantastic," he added.

"I feel comfortable now. I have made a fair amount of runs for SA and Worcestershire in County cricket over the past few months. Selectors will always have opinions. Dave Gilbert will have his. I can't buy into them," he said. (ANI)
