Sydney, Dec 6(ANI): Former South African opener Herschelle Gibbs has claimed Sri Lanka will punish Australia's misguided faith in No.3 Shane Watson, insisting that the all rounder is wasted averaging 28.5 in four Tests at one down and must open the innings, where he found his true calling, averaging 43 over 23 matches.
"Watto was one of the most consistent opening batters in world cricket You can see the value of having him as an opening batter," News.com.au quoted Gibbs, as saying.
"I don't think he adds the same dimension at No.3. I think the selectors will probably need to try and find a combination," he added.
Gibbs believes Australia needs at least one experienced force at the top of the order in 36-Test all rounder Watson.
Ed Cowan and David Warner's best opening union over the past six Tests against the West Indies and South Africa is 53 at Port of Spain in April.
"Definitely I would have Watto at the top but you need to find a partner. Sri Lanka might be a stern Test as Australia is still in a rebuilding phase," Gibbs said.
"I have seen Phil play a few times, (he is) young, his eye is good, a very attacking player," he added. (ANI)
