Jeff Thomson says Oz selectors should take blame for Perth Test debacle against South Africa
Sydney, Dec. 5 (ANI): Former Test pacer Jeff Thomson has said Australian cricket selectors must shoulder the blame for the Perth Test debacle against South Africa.
Thomson said the reluctance of the selectors to make a call on Ricky Ponting's career and the decision to overlook Mitchell Starc for the first two Tests may have cost Australia the series.
"It is hard to bag Ponting but he has been struggling for a long time and they just seemed reluctant to do anything," News.com.au quoted Thomson, as saying.
"He batted really well against India last seaon but India were terrible. Apart from that it is a few years since he has really done anything. It was sad watching him bat. He just couldn't score," he added.
"I felt sorry for Mitchell Starc because he should have bowled from day one in the series but came into the third Test underdone because he just had not done the bowling," he further said.
According to the report, like his great fast bowling mate Dennis Lillee, Thomson remains unconvinced about the merits of Australia's rotation policy which saw Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus rested in Perth after marathon workload in Adelaide.
"I thought Australia's rotation policy looked stupid when you realised that Jacques Kallis was out there batting well on one leg," he said.
"In the old days you just would have been selected and players like Lillee and Ray Lindwall would have just bowled and got on with it and you would have not known the difference," he added. (ANI)
