'On-fire' Panesar blasts 'luxury player for England' tag

London, Sun, 02 Dec 2012 ANI

London, Dec 02(ANI): Monty Panesar has admitted some people in England think he is a luxury player due to his lack of batting and fielding skills, but the left-arm spinner rejected the perception, saying he has tried his best to improve on all aspects of his game.

The 30-year-old spin king captured 11 wickets on his England comeback last week as Alastair Cook's men hammered India in the Second Test in Mumbai.

"I'm aware that some people think I'm a bit of a luxury player and say I can't bat or field. I know I'm not the world's best batter or fielder, despite all the effort and improvements I've made," the Sun quoted Panesar, as saying.

"For me to produce a performance like that, I knew I had to be at my best and my self-belief had to be high. With that in mind, I've been working for the last couple of years with Neil Burns, the former Somerset player who runs London County Cricket Club," he added.

"It's sort of a mentoring organisation. He has helped me build emotional resilience and mental focus. I feel a better cricketer and a lot more confident. When I came into international cricket, I wouldn't speak to anyone. Now I'm confident speaking to the captain and coaches," he said. (ANI)
