Kathua residents block highway over threat from monkeys

Kathua , Sun, 02 Dec 2012 ANI

Kathua (Jammu and Kashmir), Dec.2 (ANI): Hundreds of residents in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir state blocked a highway protesting against the threat from monkeys.

Tired of regular monkey bites and attacks, residents of Jasrota and Rajbagh towns stalled traffic on the Jammu-Pathankot Highway on December 2.

Shakti Devi, a victim, said: "I was going to the Gurudwara to seek blessings when monkeys surrounded me. I made a lot of noise and shouted for help but there was no one around. They bit me and I also fell down. Then some boys came who chased away the monkeys and attended to me. My blood would not stop oozing and they took me to the hospital."

According to the locals, more than 30 cases of monkey bites had taken place in recent times and that children had stopped going to school out of fear.

Meanwhile, the forest range officer of the area, Rishi Pal said that all efforts had been made to curb the nuisance.

"When the monkey problem here escalated we deployed our anti-poaching team. They had chased away the monkeys from the area. But they later came back and in bigger numbers. We complained to our top brass about it. At our level we are doing the best we can, we have asked for a gun and today we have caught a monkey as well," said Pal.

People were also seen patrolling the streets holding sticks and batons to chase away monkeys and many locals were considering migrating to other places. (ANI)
