Ponting refused hometown farewell in Hobart to avoid belittling Waugh's achievements
Sydney, Nov 30(ANI): Ricky Ponting rejected the treasured chance of a hometown Test farewell in Hobart because he did not want to belittle the career of another Australia legend Steve Waugh.
With typical understatement, Ponting approached captain Michael Clarke and coach Mickey Arthur at net training on Wednesday afternoon and quietly told them that his 17-year Test career would end against South Africa in Perth after today's third Test, News.com.au reports.
Ponting felt the time was right and he could no doubt read the signs that the support of the selection panel was fading, the paper added.
When the prospect of a hometown ending to his career in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Hobart in December was mentioned at the nets he dismissed it out of hand, it said.
Ponting joins Waugh as Australia's most capped Test player with 168 matches during the Perth Test against South Africa, and felt it would be inappropriate to advance one Test past his long-time captain, it further reported. (ANI)
