Army seeks to rehabilitate inferno victims in Kashmir
Anantnag (Jammu and Kashmir), Nov.27 (ANI): The army has sought to rehabilitate victims of last Saturday night's inferno that engulfed around 43 buildings, including houses, shops and business establishments in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district.
Mohammad Shaikh, a victim, said: "The army has made arrangements for us, but we have suffered huge losses. Each household has suffered. We can't do much about it now, but the force is providing us all the assistance. We have to somehow manage for the next six months when there will be heavy snowfall. Last year, by this time, there was snowfall, but by god's grace, this year, until now there is no snowfall. We have urged the force to provide shelter for the next six months."
Another victim, Mushtaq Ahmad, said: "The houses caught fire at around 1 or 2 a.m. in the night and the army came here by 4 a.m. Police, fire tenders and army personnel all came here and really helped us. They have given us tents and provided electricity, apart from food and medicine. We are thankful to them for helping us."
The army has distributed clothes, food and arranged for makeshift tents for accommodation of these victims.
Commanding Officer, 3 Rashtriya Rifles, Colonel D.K.Malik, said: "We have made provisions for food and people from neighbouring villages have also come. Our soldiers have given food, tea and made all arrangements. We have also arranged for blankets, tents, water pouches, generators."
Fire safety regulations are lax, rarely implemented and not periodically reviewed in most residential and small-scale commercial places and firms across India. (ANI)
