The Hague, Nov 20 (IANS) A man suspected to be involved in a 13?year?old rape?cum?murder has been arrested by Dutch Police after analysing DNA samples donated by thousands of men, Xinhua reported.

The suspect, who is in his 40s and father of two from Oudwoude village, is accused of raping and murdering Marianne Vaatstra, 16, from Zwaagwesteinde town in 1999.

The arrest came after the police in September asked some 7,300 men between 16 and 60 years old who lived up to five kilometres from the murder location to voluntarily donate DNA samples, so that they could compare them with the DNA found on the crime scene and track down the killer or his family.

The Netherlands changed its law in April this year allowing police to identify suspects using this procedure.

Local media reported that genetic material given by one of the volunteers directly matched that found on Vaatstra's body.

The suspect, a local farmer, lives 2.5 km from where Vaatstra's body was found. Dutch prosecutors said Monday that the case is still not resolved despite the DNA match and that more evidence was needed.
