India's Ambassador to Ireland meets Dy. PM, conveys India's concern

New Delhi, Nov. 17 (ANI): The Indian Ambassador to Ireland, Debashish Chakravarti, met Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Eamon Gilmore last evening and conveyed the desire of the Government of India for an independent inquiry to be conducted into the death of Dr. Savita Halappanavar and requested to be kept updated about the progress.

According to sources, he conveyed New Delhi's deep concern at the tragic death of Dr. Savita Halappanavar and expressed hope that steps would be taken so as not to allow such an incident to recur.

Foreign Minister Gilmore conveyed deepest sympathies of Ireland at the death of Dr. Halappanavar and requested that these be conveyed to the family.

He indicated that they were sensitive to the impact of the tragedy on public opinion and civil society. He assured that the inquiry being conducted by the Health Services Executive would be assisted by an independent medical professional.

Gilmore said that the investigation would be completed at an early date. The Irish side would work closely with the Indian Mission and cooperate on all aspects.

31-year-old Savita, a dentist, died in an Irish hospital after doctors refused to terminate her pregnancy despite her plea that she was miscarrying. She died of blood poisoning after spending three days in pain and agony. (ANI)
