'FDI in favour of everyone', says Tewari ahead of Winter Session of Parl.
New Delhi, Nov. 14 (ANI): With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) all set to oppose the government's decision in Parliament and try to build a joint strategy with the NDA partners and other political parties, Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari on Wednesday said Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail is in favour of everyone and is in the interest of the nation's economic growth.
"As far as FDI in multi-brand retail is concerned, we have been repeatedly saying that it is in the interest of the farmers, consumers and necessary for the country's economic growth," Tewari told mediapersons here.
Tewari said the government would continue to hold talks with those who have reservations about the policy.
"We will put our viewpoints before them and we sincerely hope that by adopting a constructive approach everybody will accept what is in the national interest," he added.
Asked whether the Government had the needed majority to get the proposals passed in the Parliament, Tewari said: "Let's not put the cart before the horse, we will cross the bridge when we come to it."
"Parliament has not begun as yet. The floor leaders are yet to meet. The presiding officers of both the houses have their own role to play," he added.
BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad earlier today said that his party would strongly oppose the government decision on FDI in multi-brand retail in the forthcoming Winter Session of Parliament.
Asserting that the decision to approve FDI in multi-brand retail is not in the interest of the country, Prasad announced that that 'the BJP will discuss its strategy with other NDA partners and also get in touch with political parties which have reservations on the issue'.
Allies of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are likely to hold a meeting on November 21 a day before the Winter Session of Parliament.
"We would like to put the government on the mat on this issue. In November 2011, the then Finance Minister had announced in the Lok Sabha that a decision on FDI in multi-brand retail will be taken only after consulting all concerned sections. A similar statement was made by the then Commerce Minister in the Rajya Sabha," said Prasad, while accusing the Centre of taking the decision unilaterally.
The Winter Session of Parliament will begin on November 22. (ANI)
