CA orders ex-player Ritchie not to speak at Test venues following racial slur
Sydney, Nov 12(ANI): Cricket Australia (CA) has ordered former player Greg Ritchie to avoid corporate speaking at Test venues after the former Test batsman ignited a race scandal during the Gabba Test.
Ritchie had also confirmed using the term 'kaffir', which is a highly-offensive description of black people, during a luncheon at the first Test between Australia and South Africa on Friday, but insists he did not use the racial slur to offend South Africans.
Ritchie, who played 30 Tests from 1982 to1987, delivered the slur recounting an anecdote of his days playing with former South Africa player KepleR Wessels for Queensland in a tour match against the West Indies in 1980.
A CA spokesperson said the organisation did not condone Ritchie's comments and has advised him not to partake in any further functions this summer.
"We have spoken to Greg Ritchie and we are obviously very disappointed at the comments made at the Gabba Members luncheon on Friday," News.com.au quoted the spokesperson, as saying.
"There is no place for racism in sport, on or off the field, and we are fully supportive of the ICC's anti-racism policy in international cricket," he added. (ANI)
