'Worried' McDermott tells impatient Aussie pacers to 'stick to basics'

Sydney, Nov. 11 (ANI): The pace display put up by the Australians in the first Test against South Africa at the Gabba has left former Aussie fast bowling coach Craig McDermott concerned.

With Australia claiming just two wickets on the opening day, and just one between pace trio Ben Hilfenhaus, Peter Siddle and James Pattinson, McDermott claimed they got it wrong on Friday.

"It was a tough day for the boys. They're disappointed with the way they bowled," McDermott told News Limited yesterday as rain tumbled down at the Gabba," New.com.au quoted McDermott, as saying.

"Our lines weren't as patient and persistent as they should have been and I'm sure they're thinking about that. We bowled a bit too short and a bit too straight," he added.

According to the report, unfortunately Siddle was the greatest offender on the opening day with his lack of consistency, and McDermott claimed that he preached some simple fundamentals about bowling at the Gabba.

"You have to make sure you bowl the correct line, not getting too straight and dont try to chase the perfect ball that pitches on middle stump and hits off. You have to bowl a fourth stump line and make the batsman come to you," he said.

"My belief is you should us them as much as you possibly can to mix the batsman's footwork up. You get them thinking 'should I go forward to the next ball or am I going to get one up my beak," he added. (ANI)
