Gurgaon, Nov.8 (ANI): Employees of Maruti Suzuki agitated in Gurgaon, Haryana, on Thursday, calling for the reinstatement of 546 workers sacked earlier by the company.
The employees, bearing red flags, demanded a high-level enquiry into the July riots that halted production, and demanded a withdrawal of allegedly 'false' cases against many workers.
"We have three demands. Firstly, the riots must be investigated in an impartial manner at a high level. Secondly, the 546 expelled employees must be negotiated with and be given their jobs back. Thirdly, the false cases taken against us must be taken back," said Imam Khan, a demonstrator.
Khan alleged that the death of human resources manager Awanish Kumar Dev in the riots was a result of a conspiracy by the company management.
"The incident that took place inside the Manesar plant was condemnable, and it was a conspiracy of the Maruti management. They engineered the killing of Mr. Awanish Kumar Dev, who had helped the workers in the formation of a union and would listen to their grievances," he said.
Shares in Maruti Suzuki India fell 1.6 percent on Tuesday (November 06) after mediapersons reported workers' plans of a hunger strike and other peaceful protests to force the management to take back the employees sacked after the deadly violence in July that hit production.
The workers are being organised by former union Maruti Suzuki Workers Union (MSWU), the Economic Times paper reported, citing a union official.
MSWU is no longer operational after instigating the July violence, according to the report.
A Maruti official confirms to Reuters that former workers were protesting, which would have no impact on production. (ANI)
