Maharashtra poor to get more cheap cooking gas cylinders

Maharashtra,Business/Economy,Politics, Wed, 07 Nov 2012 IANS

Mumbai, Nov 7 (IANS) In a pre-Diwali gift, the Maharashtra government Wednesday hiked the annual ceiling on subsidised domestic cooking gas cylinders from six to nine for the below-poverty line families and for those with an annual income of less than Rs.1 lakh.

A detailed framework of the proposal formulated by the food and civil supplies ministry is being chalked out to implement the scheme at the earliest, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said.

"The cabinet has approved the increase in the cap on LPG cylinders but only for below poverty line families and those with an annual income of less than one lakh rupees," Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anil Deshmukh told mediapersons.

He said the issue, which was expected to come up in two previous cabinet meetings, has come as a Diwali gift to poor people.

With this decision, the state government will incur an additional burden of Rs.2,400 crore per annum towards the three additional subsidied cooking gas cylinders.
