Indo-ASEAN workshop to reduce dependence on fossil fuels

New Delhi, Nov. 5 (ANI): A two days Indo-ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) workshop on 'Cooperation in Renewable Energy' started at Vigyan Bhawan here on Monday.

This workshop has been organized as a precursor to the meeting of the Ministers of Renewable Energy of ASEAN countries and India scheduled on November 7.

Gireesh Pradhan, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) inaugurated the workshop and said: "India seeks larger cooperation with ASEAN member countries in the field of renewable energy and the Cebu declaration on East Asian Energy Security of 2007 has already laid foundation for ASEAN-India cooperation in the field."

The workshop, which is being attended by experts and policy planners from ASEAN countries and India, aims at sharing of experience among participating countries on the development and deployment of renewable energy, and to identify the institutions for establishing long-term cooperation between India and ASEAN countries.

Pradhan informed that the Government of India is encouraging foreign investors to set up renewable power projects on 'Build Own Operate' basis with 100 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and he invited the investors from the ASEAN member countries to invest in renewable energy sector in India.

During the two day workshop, eight Technical Sessions will be organized covering the topics on Trends in Renewable Energy Technology Transfer on Wind, Solar and Biomass power, Resource Assessment Techniques, Renewable Powered Micro-Grids Rural Electrification and Development, Off-grid Renewable Energy Applications, ASEAN-India cooperation in R andD in Renewable Energy under AISTDF, and Deliberation on ASEAN-India cooperation in Renewable Energy.

The workshop would also discuss technological strengths and manufacturing base of the participating countries in order to forge useful partnership.

About 150 participants, including policy makers, senior officials, technology and Industry experts from ASEAN member countries are here to attend the workshop. (ANI)
