Security tightened at Allahabad ahead of Maha Kumbh Mela

Allahabad, Nov 3 (ANI): The Police has beefed up security at Allahabad ahead of the revered fair of Maha Kumbh Mela to be held in the holy town, which attracts million of devotees.

The Kumbh Mela takes place in mid January every year when the Sun traverses across the Tropic of Cancer Tropic of Cancer, parallel of latitude at 23030' north of the equator; it is the northern boundary of the tropics.

Kumbh Mela will be held from January 14 (Makarsankranti) to March 10 (Vaisakh Aadhimaas Purnima, Hindu calendar).

Over 10 million people are expected to arrive in the city to participate in the event

Informing about the security measures, Superintendent of Police, Allahabad, RKS Rathore, said the district authorities have made adequate security arrangements to ensure safety and protection of the devotees.

"A total of 25, 000 security officials comprising of 12 additional Superintendent of Police (SP), 50 Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and 40 companies of PAC (Provincial Armed Constabulary), 30 CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) companies and 15, 000 civil police personnel will be deployed for strong safety arrangements," said Rathore.

He said that the entire town would be divided into 30 parts and further into six zones, which will be divided into 14 sectors. A constable will be deployed at every micro sector for better law and order and traffic management of that area.

"Extra control room is being set up wherein 85 CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) would be installed in order to monitor the crowd and further help in management of traffic," said Rathore.

He also said that adequate measures are being taken to ensure smooth supply of drinking water and electricity.

Held in every twelve years and rotating among Allahabad, Nasik, Haridwar, and Ujjain, the Mela takes place when the planet Jupiter enters Aquarius and Sun enters Aries, according to the Hindu Lunar calendar. (ANI)
