Smith says Surrey captaincy won't jeopardize Proteas career
London, Nov. 2 (ANI): South Africa captain Graeme Smith has pledged to remain a Proteas player for "many years to come" despite agreeing a three-year deal to captain Surrey.
In a major coup for the first division club, Smith, currently in Australia as South Africa prepare to defend their No1 Test team status, will take the helm at the Kia Oval from next season, a move that has thrown some doubt over the direction of the 102-Test opener's international future.
Smith, 31, however, has reiterated that he would find a balance between being Test captain and county captain.
"I am excited to be joining such a professional and talented team, during what will hopefully prove to be a rewarding and successful period for Surrey CCC," the Daily Express quoted Smith, as saying.
"It was an easy decision . I am excited about what we can achieve at Surrey and would like to state very clearly that I will balance my new role alongside my continuing commitments to the Proteas. I look forward to continuing to represent my country for many years to come," he added.
Smith has scope to stay true to both positions with South Africa's fixtures list during the next three English summers reading fairly bare, the paper said.
In any case, his arrival at the Kia Oval is likely to provide a major boost for Surrey, who had been searching for a new captain since Rory Hamilton-Brown stepped down from the role last season following the death in June of his team-mate and close friend Tom Maynard, it added. (ANI)
