Supreme Court on Wednesday has directed the Center and State governments to provide basic facilities in all the school across the country within 6 months.
Basic infrastructure includes drinking water and toilets especially for girls.
A bench headed by Justice KS Radhakrishnan passed the order on a petition filed by an NGO Environmental and Consumer Protection Foundation.
On October 18 last year, the apex court had directed all states and union territories to build toilets, particularly for girls, in all government schools.
Research indicates that wherever toilet facilities are not provided in schools, parents do not send their children (particularly girls) to schools.
Not providing the basic infrastructure in schools is a violation of the right to free and compulsory education of children guaranteed under Article 21-A of the Constitution.
