Solan (Himachal Pradesh), Oct. 25 (ANI): Congress Party general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Thursday criticised the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which rules in the state of Himachal Pradesh, for opposing the central government's move to allow foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail.
Addressing a party rally this afternoon, Gandhi said: "They (BJP) did not debate, they didn't discuss. Nor, did they seek your opinion about the FDI. They just opposed it."
The central government has allowed foreign direct investment (FDI) in its retail sector, a major economic reform that had been stalled for months by political gridlock, and was a part of a package of reform measures aimed at reviving growth rate.
The move triggered a nationwide protest by the BJP as well as some of the government's allies.
Gandhi also claimed that the BJP had scuttled the Land Acquisition Bill in parliament.
"We brought the bill. The BJP members stalled the bill in the parliamentary committee. They connived with others to prolong it so that it is not passed. Who is at loss? Not the BJP. The poor farmers suffer," added Gandhi.
Last week, a Group of Ministers (GoM) approved a long-delayed and controversial Land Acquisition Bill, which seeks to replace 1894 law enacted by the British.
He also alleged that the BJP had blocked pro-people bills such as to food, waiving off loans, right to information and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Gurantee Act (MGNREGA).
"They oppose every bill such as right to food, MGNREGA, waiving off loans, RTI and etc. They don't debate and discuss. They only oppose," added he.
Assembly elections are to be held in Himachal Pradesh on November 4. (ANI)
