Chennai hosts crafts fair to promote north-east artisans

Chennai, Oct. 24 (ANI): Chennai is hosting a crafts fair for artisans from the north east under the aegis of the Northeastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation.

The fair 'Crafts Bazaar' began on October 22 and would conclude on October 31.

The crafts of the northeastern region are yet to get the required exposure across the country.

The judge of the exhibition, Balasubramany, said that the fair would provide a market to the artisans, as they can sell their products directly to the customers, without a middleman.

"There is a programme called 'Crafts Bazaar', which is organized by the Northeastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation in cooperation with and sponsored by the Development Commissioner, Handicrafts, Ministry of Textile, Government of India, New Delhi for the promotion of artisans of northeastern states, that is called the eight (seven) sisters, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. The people from these states have come here with their own products and selling their items without a middleman in this fair. That is the main theme and people whoever is manufacturing, they are aiming for the sales. So, they know what type of goods is needed for the people and what is the new design they can make as per the guidelines of the customer," said Balasubramany.

The artisans from the northeast region showcased their artifacts and crafts at this fair, which included utility items, clothing, showpieces, foot wear, bags and ornamental jewellery.

The craftsmen participating in the fair were delighted to witness an increase in sales of their products.

An artisan from Manipur, Pam, briefed the mediapersons about her product.

"This product is of Manipur and made of stone. We use two types of stone; one is weather rock and bentonite. So, we crush it into powder, mix that powder together. We put water, make a clay formation and then we make the shape. After that we place it on fire. So, these are all meant for cooking directly on the gas, microwave, and oven as well and these are all our traditional cooking ware," said Pam.

Baskets made of bamboo and cane, bamboo carvings and cane furniture caught everybody's attention.

One of the visitors, Rajashree, that it was amazing to see such a huge variety under one roof.

"I came here like I just wanted to see here some of the crafts. It is very good and it is nice to see here. There are so much of varieties over here. I like to purchase something like some of wood things and valuable things," said Rajashree.

This exhibition was also organized with the aim of reviving crafts of the northeast region that are on the verge of extinction.

Such fairs not only bring the craftsmen into limelight, but also provide an opportunity to the people to find out more about arts and crafts from another region. (ANI)
