Libya singles out 'Benghazi-based Islamist' as leader of US consulate attack

Washington, Thu, 18 Oct 2012 ANI

Washington, Oct 18 (ANI): Libyan authorities have singled out the leader of the Benghazi-based Islamist group as the commander in last month's attack on the U.S. consulate that killed three American officials.

Libyans involved in the investigation said that witnesses at the scene of the attack have said they saw Ahmed Abu Khattala leading the assault, and his personal involvement is the latest link between the attack and his brigade, Ansar al-Sharia, a puritanical militant group.

According to the New York Times, Abu Khattala's exact role, or how much of the leadership he shared with others, is not yet clear.

When asked last week about Abu Khattala's role, an American official involved in a separate United States investigation declined to comment on any particular suspects.

The official, however, however, indicated that the U.S. was tracking Abu Khattala and cautioned that the leadership of the attack might have been broader than a single man.

"Ansar al-Sharia is not only a shadowy group, it's also quite factionalized. There isn't necessarily one overall military commander of the group," the paper quoted the official, as saying. (ANI)
