CPI-M to launch protests against Kerala government

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 17 (IANS) The CPI-M state committee that met here over the past two days has decided to launch a series of protests against the Oommen Chandy government in Kerala for taking "an anti-people stance".

"On December 1, women will take to the streets at 4.30 p.m. from Manjeswaram in North Kerala to the southern border at Parassala. They would light a kiln and cook food to protest against the centre's decision to restrict the number of gas cylinders," party secretary Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters Wednesday night.

The party has also decided to organise a state-wide convention of scheduled castes in the state at Kollam Dec 9.

"Our party committees in each scheduled castes colony in the state will take them to the convention. Scheduled castes have been very much a part of us, but of late there have been some elements that have crept into these colonies. Hence we have decided to organise them," added Vijayan.

Also, the CPI-M's decision to recruit volunteers to occupy excess land in possession of people and companies, especially estates, is expected to create a law and order problem.

"The law of the land is that no family in the state can possess more than 15 acres of land (other than agricultural land). There are numerous estates where their lease has expired but there are still in the possession of companies. Our volunteers will identify and take over such land on January 1. The state government should see that such land is handed over to the homeless, to the scheduled castes and tribal community," added Vijayan.

The party will also organise protests meetings in November against the central government's decision to invite FDI in retail.
