Youth keenly take up boxing in Jorhat.

Jorhat (Assam), Oct. 15 (ANI): The passion for boxing is rising among youth in the noertheast, especially after the success of Mary Kom and Devendro Singh at the international level.

This is the buzzword for 13-year-old Krishna Phukan of Jorhat city in Assam who aims to become an international boxing star.

A class eight student, Krishna is keen to emulate Mary Kom and is training hard in the rings of the Jorhat District Amateur Boxing Association.

Krishna's stint with boxing began at a very early age and she has won several medals and accolades.

The junior boxer is preparing hard for the national camp to be held in late October from where she aims to represent Assam in the national sub junior category.

"I love boxing. I have participated in Dibrugarh and won medal at the state level. Now I want to play at national level and hope to get a gold medal again. I want to play like Mary Kom," said Phukan.

Hundreds of aspiring boxers in Jorhat are sweating hard to make a career in this sport.

The bronze medal of Mary Kom, impressive performance of machine gun kid Laishram Devendro Singh and young Shiva Thapa have inspired them.

About 100 candidates have registered for training at Jorhat District Amateur Boxing Association which is more than double of what used to be in earlier years.

Among these aspiring pugilists, there are a large number of women boxers too.

Established in 1989, this academy is one of the oldest sports club in Jorhat city and has produced many national level boxers like Pronamika Borah and Prathiba Kachari.

"I came to take training in boxing. My trainers are teaching us well. My family supports my dream to become a great boxer. I want to do something in life and someday I want to make my parents and my country proud by winning medal," Mohammad feroz Ali.

Youth in northeast are not just sports frenzy but are also extremely talented. Mary Kom, Somdeb Debburman, and Shiva Thapa are several eminent names from the region that have won laurels at international levels and made the country proud.

Their success has given a huge moral boost to the confidence of the upcoming sport persons from the region. (ANI)
